GLASTONBURY VFW PACKING/COLLECTION EVENT TO BE HELD SEPTEMBER 22

Glastonbury VFW Post 7659 and its Women’s Auxiliary are sponsoring a “Support our Troops” collection and packing event on Sunday, September 22, starting at noon at South Congregational Church, 1301 Forbes Street, East Hartford.

This month the group will be sending out donated chocolate Girl Scout Cookies to all the troops on their list. They are also collecting wash cloths, small towels, socks and dental needs (toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, etc.) to send to the troops. Items will be accepted the day of the event before 1 p.m. or by prior arrangement with Commander Frank Forrest of the VFW.

In addition to donations, the group needs volunteers to help sort items and pack boxes, starting at 12 p.m. Volunteers may also make drawings and cards to include with the packages; children’s artwork is especially popular with the troops. This month’s theme is “pumpkins and falling leaves.” Groups are asked to stamp the back of their artwork with their addresses so that troops can respond directly to them.

Lunch will be held after the packing is completed. All volunteers are invited. Food will be provided; side dishes are always welcomed.

The group also needs monetary donations to help defray postage costs, which run in the hundreds of dollars each month. Checks should be made out to Glastonbury VFW and mailed to: Glastonbury VFW, c/o Frank Forrest, 165 Maple Street, East Hartford, CT 06118.
