HIKING THRU HISTORY: A GUIDED TOUR ALONG THE CONNECTICUT RIVER IN SOUTH GLASTONBURY

Walk, Talk, and Dinner Presented by the Historical Society of Glastonbury

Started in 1655, the Glastonbury-Rocky Hill ferry is believed to be the oldest continuously operated ferry in the United States.  The ferry slip on the Glastonbury side of the Connecticut River , a significant historic district, will be the site of the Historical Society of Glastonbury’s 2014 walking tour.  On Monday, April 28th, your guide and Glastonbury native, Dr. Brian Chiffer will bring you down the dock landings along the Connecticut River in South Glastonbury , discussing the area, the industries, and people who made this unique area come alive.  Hikers will explore remains of the old steamship dock, old coal dock, and the ship building facility at log landing (river levels permitting).  The tour will be approximately ninety minutes followed by an optional dinner and a short slide show thru history at Olympic Pizza.
This one time hub for local transportation is a historic explorer’s delight.  You’ll have a whole new appreciation for an area you already know and enjoy.   Attendees will meet at 6:00 pm at Ferry Slip in South Glastonbury .  The walk, talk and pizza dinner is $20. Walk alone $10. Funds go toward the Historical Society of Glastonbury’s education and preservation programs.  So reserve your spot (860.633.6890), get out your hiking shoes (which you don’t mind getting wet!) and get ready to hike your way thru the history of the Glastonbury-Rocky Hill Ferry and Connecticut River in South Glastonbury.
