Support the troops with VFW packing event May 4
The Glastonbury VFW and Post 7659 Women’s Auxiliary will be holding a collection event to support our overseas troops on Sunday, May 4 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., at South Congregational Church, 1301 Forbes Street, East Hartford.
This month the focus is on personal care items for the women on the mailing list. The group is requesting donations of personal care items such as soap; shampoo and conditioner in smaller sizes; lotions and sunscreen (no aerosols, please); washcloths and small towels; socks; dental needs; and just about anything else a young women would like to have when away from home without a local store to stop in for supplies. Items will be accepted the day of the event before 1 p.m. or by special arrangement with Commander Frank Forrest.
Volunteers are needed to help sort items and pack boxes. Volunteers may also make drawings and cards to include with the packages.

“Children’s artwork is very popular and we get photos from soldiers with walls covered with our art,” said Forrest who organizes the monthly packing events. “This month’s theme is ‘Flowers in the Garden.’ It’s a way to bring a bit of our beautiful Connecticut spring to those serving overseas. Groups are asked to stamp the back of work with their address so responses will go directly to them.”
Added Forrest, “We are not forgetting all the troops on our list. We will be sending donated Girl Scout cookies to everyone on our list.”

Lunch will be held after the packing is completed. All are invited; bring a side dish if you’d like.
It costs more than $500 to ship the packages, and the group welcomes donations to help defray postage costs. Checks should be made out to “Glastonbury VFW” and mailed to: Glastonbury VFW, c/o Frank Forrest, 165 Maple Street, East Hartford, CT 06118.
