A total of 1,501 Glastonbury residents have obtained pistol permits, equating to a pistol permit rate of 4.4 percent, according to a state-wide database created by the New Haven Register.

The database uses information from the State of Connecticut and 2010 population data to map out pistol permit rates by town. Glastonbury ranks 134th on the list. Overall the state's more rural locales have higher percentages of gun ownership than the more urban and suburban areas.

Canaan and Union take the top spots on the database, with respective pistol permit rates of 13.5 and 12.1 percent.  The lowest rates are in New Haven and Hartford, with 1.6 and 1.5 percent respectively.

Around 170,000 Connecticut residents have pistol permits, according to the New Haven Register.

Glastonbury residents must apply for a pistol permit through the police department.  From the town's website:

Residents may come to the police department in person to pick up the pistol permit application forms or access them on line by going to the Police Department section of the web site and then click on forms. Once the application form is completed it must be returned in person to the police department so the application can be processed.

Additional information on the application process is available on the Connecticut General Assembly website.

The complete database can be viewed on the New Haven Register website.
