Diminico Claims Victory in 13th Assembly District Primary Contest

The 13th Assembly District is comprised of portions of both Manchester and Glastonbury.

Unofficial results in the Democratic primary for the 13th Assembly District give the race to Manchester's  Tuesday night. 

According to information provided by Manchester Democratic Town Committee Chairman Mike Pohl, Diminico received 787 votes in the district, which was recently redistricted to include portions of Glastonbury. 

Diminico's Democratic competitor, Glastonbury town council member , received 457 votes.

"Tom and I worked very hard; became very close," Diminico said shortly after his victory was announced Tuesday. "We have very similar interests; very similar goals."

"I've been nothing but flattered, impressed, and humbled by all the people in Glastonbury," Diminico said. "I look forward to working with them in the future for the ultimate goal of bringing a democratic candidate to the legislature."

A lifelong Manchester resident, Diminico is a graduate of East Catholic High School and had a 25-year career with the town of Manchester, retiring as Program Director of the Manchester Senior Center.

Gullotta is the C.E.O. of a children’s mental health and social service agency that employs 175 human service professionals. He is also an adjunct faculty member of Eastern Connecticut State University's psychology and education departments. 

"We knew we were the underdog when we began this race," Gullotta said. "We ran a campaign focused on issues. We ran a campaign that involved saying hello to as many people as we could."

"It just wasn't meant to be," Gullotta said.

The two were vying to secure the Democratic nomination for the seat being vacated for , who has served since 1986. 

Mark Tweedie, a member of the Manchester Board of Directors, is the Republican candidate running for the seat in November. 

Pohl said Chris Murphy also won the Manchester vote for the U.S. Senate primary to fill the seat held by the retiring Joseph Lieberman. Murphy received 1,501 votes, according to Pohl, compared to Susan Bysiewicz's 727 votes.
