Glastonbury Budget to be Presented at Town Meeting Tonight

The Glastonbury town operating budget and board of education budget will be presented at 7 p.m. in town hall.

 

The proposed 2013-14 operating budget will be presented at the annual town meeting at 7 p.m. tonight in the town council chambers of the town hall.

Town Manager Richard J. Johnson will present the overall town operating spending plan, as well as the proposed budget for the capital improvement program and the debt and transfer budget. Last year Johnson presented a $141.5 million budget proposal for the 2012-13 fiscal year, an increase of 2.64 percent. The mill rate increased from 30.05 to 30.7 mills.

Last year’s budget included $36.5 million for town expenditures, an increases from 2011-12 of 2.18 percent. It also included $91.5 million for education, an increase of 2.67 percent. The town council later cut $200,000 from the town and $600,000 from the board of education.

During tonight’s meeting, Superintendent Alan B. Bookman will present the board of education’s $94.7 million spending plan, which includes the $500,000 for additional security guards.

Opening remarks will be made by Town Council Chairman Stewart “Chip” Beckett III and Board of Education Chairwoman Susan Karp.
