Glastonbury Center Gets New Keepsake

Workers on Thursday installed a noticeably new addition to Main Street. Did you see it?

So you can get the time on your phone, your iPod, your car radio, your watch ... really just about anywhere these days.

But as of Thursday, denizens traveling along Main Street have another time-check option: an eye-catching black and gold-leaf clock right on the corner of Main Street and Hebron Avenue.

The timepiece was installed over Wednesday and Thursday afternoon by town workers and is the brainchild of several local residents, including artist Christopher Gurshin and Emmy Lou DeBari, owner of gift shop in town.

The volunteers formed a committee to raise donations and its other members include Jim Bennett, Susan Karp, Peter Billard and Bethanne Couture.

The group raised $15,000 to purchase the two-sided clock, which has the town's name at the top in white, along with the town's date of establishment just under the clock face. The clock, which has Roman numerals, sits atop a pole, which in turn sits on top of a black base. Its traditional New England design is reminiscent of the light poles along Main Street.

The clock was installed on town property next to the historic John Welles home on Main Street.

Gurshin said the clock's price was pushed up by the use of gold leaf in the design, which is costly. He said he began thinking, more than a year ago, that the town center needed a new timepiece because it hasn't had one in some time.

He and other committee members raised the money for the clock through private donations and the town donated the public work crew's time to install it.
