Glastonbury Council Members Oppose River Ferry Fare Increases

Council members join state legislators and local residents who are opposing the proposed Glastonbury-Rocky Hill Ferry rate hike.

Calling the proposed fare increase for the Glastonbury-Rocky Hill Ferry "obscene" and "ridiculous," members of the Glastonbury Town Council voiced their opposition during Tuesday night's Town Council meeting.

"Doubling the fare is ridiculous," Councilman Whit Osgood said. "I can't imagine what they were thinking."

The state Department of Transportation is proposing raising fares for vehicles from $3 to $6; the fare for pedestrian passengers will increase from $1 to $2.

"It's $6 for a quarter mile across the river," Councilman Kurt Cavanaugh said. "I think that is obscene."

"I think $3 is enough," Councilman Thomas Gullotta said.

The council's opposition joins that of state legislators and other local residents. A public hearing on the fare increases will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Rocky Hill Community Center.
